Heart-rate ratio
VO₂ max = 15.3 × maximum heart rate ÷ resting heart rate. When maximum heart rate is not measured, this page uses the Tanaka estimate: 208 − 0.7 × age.
Cooper 12-minute run
VO₂ max = (distance in meters − 504.9) ÷ 44.73.
Rockport 1-mile walk
The original equation estimates absolute liters per minute from weight in pounds, age, sex code, walk time and finish heart rate, then converts it to mL/kg/min.
VO₂ Max Calculation Examples
The VO₂ max calculator heart-rate method uses HRmax 190 and resting HR 60 to give 15.3 × 190 ÷ 60 = 48.5 mL/kg/min.
Cooper: 2,400 meters in 12 minutes gives (2,400 − 504.9) ÷ 44.73 = 42.4 mL/kg/min.
Rockport: a 40-year-old man weighing 80 kg, walking 1 mile in 15:00 with finish HR 130, gives approximately 41.0 mL/kg/min.
