What Is an FFMI Calculator?
An FFMI calculator compares estimated fat-free body mass with height. FFMI, or Fat-Free Mass Index, divides fat-free mass in kilograms by height in meters squared. Unlike BMI, the FFMI calculator first removes estimated fat mass, so the quality of the body-fat input strongly affects the answer.

FFMI Calculator Formula
The FFMI calculator first estimates fat-free mass, then divides it by height squared. It also reports the Kouri height normalization to a reference height of 1.80 m.

FFMI Calculation Example
This FFMI calculator example uses 180 cm, 80 kg and 15% body fat. Estimated fat-free mass is 80 × 0.85 = 68.0 kg and fat mass is 12.0 kg. FFMI is 68 ÷ 1.80² = 21.0. Because the example height is exactly 1.80 m, normalized FFMI is also 21.0.
What FFMI Can and Cannot Tell You
The FFMI calculator is useful for comparing estimated fat-free mass relative to height or tracking the same person under consistent measurement conditions. It does not directly measure muscle quality, strength, health or athletic performance.
The FFMI calculator depends on your body-fat estimate. Consumer scales, calipers, circumference formulas and visual estimates can disagree, and even a small error changes FFMI. Compare trends only when the measurement method and conditions remain similar.
Raw FFMI is straightforward for tracking one person whose height does not change. Height-normalized FFMI was introduced to make comparisons across different heights, but it remains a model based on particular research samples. For tracking, use the FFMI calculator with the same body-fat method, similar hydration, and comparable timing. The FFMI calculator can then show a more meaningful trend, although it still cannot separate measurement error from a real change in fat-free mass. Keep several observations before treating a small difference as meaningful, and save the original measurements with the calculated index. A practical record includes height, weight, body-fat estimate, unit system, date, and measurement method because a rounded result alone cannot explain why it changed. If the body-fat method changes, start a new comparison series instead of treating the new value as directly continuous with the old one. This preserves the calculation’s educational value without implying a level of measurement precision that the inputs cannot support.
Research context — not a personal classification
Kouri and colleagues described a preliminary sample of 157 male athletes: 74 reported non-users and 83 reported users of anabolic-androgenic steroids. Normalized FFMI among reported non-users extended to 25.0; many reported users exceeded 25 and some exceeded 30. The FFMI calculator presents this as research context, not a personal cutoff. These findings describe one male-athlete sample and cannot determine whether an individual uses performance-enhancing drugs.
FFMI vs. BMI
A BMI calculator divides total body weight by height squared and does not separate fat from fat-free tissue. The FFMI calculator uses estimated fat-free mass instead of total weight. Both are summary indices, and neither is a diagnosis or complete assessment of health.
